Fireworks Regulations: A Comprehensive Guide for New Year’s Celebrations

Fireworks, once once more stars of the New Year’s “boom”: “The ideal would be to accept them only on December 24 and 31 from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.”

The Brussels-Capital Region has already issued a similar ban, valid from December 15 to January 3, but with a completely different perspective: the capital thus wants to avoid acts of vandalism and the spread of small fires. East Flanders is therefore the first province this year to ban pyrotechnic devices due to the weather.

“With winds of up to 75 km/h, the risk of accidents is particularly present when launching fireworks, especially by inexperienced people,” emphasized Ms Van Cauter. Shooting but also the simple possession of equipment is therefore prohibited. The measure was taken in consultation with the mayors and the security services.

Before the governor extended the decision to the entire territory of the province, several cities in East Flanders, such as Ghent, Ninove or Grammont, had already taken the lead.

”A provincial ban has the advantage of clarifying things by applying the same rule everywhere. Only professionals are not concerned, for the moment because this can still change depending on the circumstances,” concluded the governor.

His Antwerp counterpart, Cathy Berx, consulted the municipal councils on a potential ban but no measure in this direction has yet been taken.

In West Flanders and Flemish Brabant, no provincial decision has been issued to prohibit pyrotechnic devices. However, fireworks are already banned due to wind in many municipalities, including the 18 in the Westhoek emergency zone, which covers Nieuwpoort, Koksijde, De Panne and Ypres. In Flemish Brabant, certain municipalities are also evaluating the usefulness of revoking certain granted exceptions.
