For reasons that have not yet been fully clarified, a wooden garage extension to a single-family home caught fire on New Year’s Day at 1:30 a.m. in Niederthalheim following a New Year’s celebration that had previously been held in the driveway area of the single-family home and included the firing of two large fireworks batteries and several large firework rockets.
According to a witness, one of the large rockets detonated near the ground and the sparks from the rocket also shot towards the house and garage. After the fireworks were shot off, the party went back into the living room of the house to continue celebrating. According to the witnesses, the power went out around 1 a.m. and a fire might be seen coming from the direction of the entrance. The fire was then noticed in the garage area.
The flames subsequently spread to the facade and roof of the house. Therefore, alert level two was immediately declared. Eleven alerted fire departments immediately began extensive extinguishing work to prevent the flames from spreading to surrounding buildings and the rest of the house.
Further investigations into the cause of the fire are being carried out.
