Rising energy prices, including electricity and gas, benefit firewood sellers, who are struggling to meet growing demand. In fact, more and more French people are opting for wood heating, which is more economical. The demand for this fuel is such that the stocks of these sellers are often out of stock. This is particularly the case in Charente-Maritime, where Christophe Escandell shared his situation with journalists from France Télévisions.
Wood heating is an excellent alternative to its electric or gas counterparts, which have become extremely expensive since the price of these energies soared. More and more French people are heating themselves with wood stoves or fireplaces, to the delight of wood merchants, who sometimes find themselves faced with insufficient stocks to satisfy growing demand.
In Charente-Maritime, Christophe Escandelle is the manager of a company that sells wood, and the least he can say is that his business is not suffering from the crisis. And for good reason, its sales have increased dramatically. “In September this year, we delivered 1,400 cubic meters. Usually it’s 800 to 900 steres. For two years, there has been an increase of between 12 and 15%,” he said.
Firewood sellers facing supply difficulties
One of Christophe’s clients, Franck Carrance, lives in Saint-Quantin-de-Rançanne, near Pons. He bought 10 cubic meters of wood to be able to get through the winter without needing to turn on his radiators, while benefiting from an efficient means of heating. He shared his perspective, saying: “I live in an old house that is not very well insulated, and to improve thermal efficiency, there is nothing better than wood.”
There are more and more fans of wood heating and the secretary of Christophe Escandelle’s company confirms it, the order books are full: “It can go from around ten calls to around thirty calls in the day “. We can easily predict that these professionals have good days ahead of them, but a problem persists, and that is supply. Stocks are already well under way and, taking into account the constant evolution of demand, suppliers may well have difficulty meeting it. For his part, Christophe Escandell plans to expand his company in Grézac by doubling its surface area to better meet the growing demand of his customers.
