Fires in southern Italy: 1,200 tourists evacuated

Due to a large forest fire in the Bay of San Felice near the Apulian coastal town of Vieste, the fire brigade ordered the evacuation of a campsite and a holiday village where around 1,200 holidaymakers were staying on Wednesday.

Several tourists were taken by boat to a gym provided by the municipality of Vieste. Two Canadair planes and a fire helicopter were deployed along with firefighting teams on the ground to fight the flames, which were driven towards the holiday village by strong winds. The mayor of Vieste described the situation in Italian media as “critical”.

Italy is currently suffering from a heat wave, with new forest fires breaking out almost every day. On Sunday, serious fires broke out in Sardinia. Last week, two firefighters died while fighting a fire in the Basilicata region.
