The large forest fires in the Dadia forest area near the Greek-Turkish border are still not under control. Around 600 firefighters with 122 fire engines, eight firefighting planes and two helicopters fought the flames on Saturday, the daily newspaper “Kathimerini” reported. Strong winds continue to blow in the impassable, densely forested and mountainous region, and new fires are constantly breaking out.

Overall, the risk of forest fires in parts of Greece remained very high to extremely high on Saturday, according to civil defense. The islands of Euboea, Lesbos and Crete as well as the Attica region around the capital Athens are affected.
