In the Hawaiian archipelago, the human toll from the fires on the island of Maui is 99 dead, a figure which might still double because only 25% of the area has been examined. We learn that some residents had their lives saved thanks to their telephone and their satellite connection.

At the heart of a blaze, a family of five escaped death. Trapped in a vehicle, deprived of networks, they were however able to be guided by the emergency services. The relative of one of the survivors shared this exchange with the emergency services on social networks: “Five people inside a white van aged between 18 and 30, please give us advice, there is fire everywhere, we can’t see anything, everything is burning around us, must- drive us?”. Thirty minutes of ordeal later, the family in distress once more calls for help, they will be rescued a few moments later.

Rescue with smartphone

The rescue was made possible thanks to the emergency call service of his Apple-branded smartphone. The latest model has a backup function to communicate via satellite connection. A means of contact accessible, therefore, to only part of the population and whose effectiveness differs depending on where you are. Maui has suffered power outages rendering the classic emergency number unreachable in some parts of the island. So far, at least 99 people have lost their lives in the devastating fires that have hit Hawaii.
