Firefighters fight fires near the ancient site of Olympia

As a precautionary measure, the Greek civil defense arranged for the evacuation of several villages just a few kilometers north-west of Olympia via warning SMS and Twitter. Roads were also closed. According to the fire brigade, 29 fire engines as well as five airplanes and a helicopter were in action

For the first time in more than a week, Greek civil protection estimated the risk of forest fires to be somewhat lower on Saturday – but many regions of the country are still considered to be at risk. After weeks of drought and a longer heat wave during the week, the island of Rhodes and the region around the central Greek town of Anchialos were particularly badly hit. There, however, the source of the fire was extinguished on Saturday and at least under control.
