Fire threatens Athens, leaving more than 50,000 evacuated

A great fire The forest fire, with a front of 40 kilometres, continued to approach north of Athens on Monday, where some 50,000 people have had to be evacuated, while the government has asked the European Union for help in fighting a fire that has already burned 10,000 hectares.

More than 700 firefighters, with 200 trucks, 17 planes and 15 tanker helicopters, operated today in a wide area to the north and east of the capital to try to stop the fire that started yesterday Sunday.

European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen announced on Monday that four EU countries will send land and air resources to Greece to help with the firefighting efforts.

“We are on the side of Greece in its fight against the devastating fires. The European Union is sending support from its ‘rescEU’ fleet: two planes from Italy and a helicopter from France. Firefighting teams from the Czech Republic and Romania have also been deployed,” the president of the European Executive said in a message on her X account.

The situation has been extremely difficult today in the urban areas of Vrilisia and Khalandri, about 13 kilometers northeast of the center of Athens, where dozens of houses and businesses were burned.

Further north, firefighters and volunteers assisted by water trucks from the affected municipalities continued to fight several fronts near the towns of Dionysus, Marathon, and Varnava.
