In the Terfener Tunnel in Tyrol, a tunnel of the new Unterinntalbahn, a fire broke out Wednesday evening near Fritzens for reasons that are not yet exactly known. According to the state, a Nightjet with 151 passengers was in the tunnel when the fire broke out. 33 people were slightly injured or there was a suspicion of smoke poisoning, it was said on Thursday night. The police had previously assumed that around 50 people were slightly injured.

Those affected were taken to nearby hospitals for further investigation. Just following 11 p.m., all passengers had been evacuated. In the meantime, the emergency services had accepted up to 370 passengers because of the seat reservations. However, this was ultimately not confirmed. The evacuation was only possible with fire escape hoods, according to the Tyrol control center. The exact cause of the fire was initially unclear. Apparently, a car on a night train caught fire due to damage to the overhead line.

The ÖBB announced that rescue tents were waiting for the passengers who had been brought to safety, where they might be cared for. Those who did not need medical care were taken to Innsbruck by bus. Sleeping facilities for all people have been organized, the country reported.

The train had been on its way to Hamburg or Amsterdam. The fire had triggered a large deployment of rescue workers. 700 emergency services were on the spot, around 20 fire brigades alone were called out.
