Fire in Schaerbeek: a woman in critical condition


Brussels firefighters intervened on Sunday followingnoon for a fire in a squatted building in Schaerbeek. A lady was taken unconscious from the damaged building. She was evacuated to the hospital in a worrying state, according to the firefighters.

The firefighters were called around 4:30 p.m. for a fire that broke out in a squatted building, rue Jul Merckaert in Schaerbeek. “During the “search and rescue”, an unconscious lady was evacuated from the second floor“, explained Walter Derieuw, the spokesperson for the Brussels fire brigade.There were no other occupants on site“.

The victim was immediately resuscitated by the medical team on site. “The lady was then evacuated to the hospital. Unfortunately, his vital prognosis is engaged“, indicated Walter Derieuw.

The cause of the fire remains to be determined. The firefighters intervened with two pumpers, two self-ladders and three ambulances. A SMUR team was also on site. In addition, the Brussels-North police zone had set up a security perimeter to facilitate the work of the emergency services.
