At the front of the fire in Nemea is the Minister of Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias, where he held a meeting to coordinate actions for the fire front that is ongoing in Stimaga and Koutsi. The meeting is attended by the Regional Governor of Peloponnese Dimitris Ptochos, the Corinthian Deputy Minister of Finance Mr. Christos Dimas, the Deputy Regional Governor of Corinth Anastasios Giolis, the Mayor of Nemea, Kostas Frousios and the deputy mayors of Nemea.

They operate 159 firefighters with 6 forest commando groups and 49 vehicles, while 19 aerial vehicles, 11 aircraft and 8 helicopters, of which 2 for their coordination, were available and operated periodically. Subsidy is provided by water and earthmoving machinery from the Municipality, the Region and the Army.
“It is important to stress that the difficult times are ahead of us. In any case, we avoid actions that can cause a fire,” stressed the Fire Department’s press representative, Vassilis Vathrakogiannis.

With reference to the forest fire that occurred in the early followingnoon of Thursday, July 11, 2024 in the wider area of the Stimaga settlement in Corinthia, the fire-meteorological conditions are expected to show a gradual, small improvement during the night, mainly in terms of wind intensity, the which is expected not to exceed 2-3 Beaufort, blowing from more westerly/northwesterly directions.‼️
It is pointed out, however, that the flammability (ease of ignition) of forest fuels is expected to remain high during the night as well, an element that makes it difficult to control the fire at night, which is otherwise easier. The persistence of high flammability means that even with light winds, fire can spread quickly and develop large heat loads.
The forest fire of Stimagas in Corinthia is now also visible by satellite, as can be seen in the following image, with the smoke of the fire having moved south over the island of Kythira. The above is a product of a research project implemented at IEPBA/EAA.
