In the Varnava community of Marathona municipality the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the KKE has been here since the morning Dimitris Koutsoubas.
Dimitris Koutsoubas met with the president of the community Giorgos Ilias and spoke with residents of the area, who have been fighting since yesterday to save their homes from the great fire.
The situation is very critical, said D. Koutsoubas
D. Koutsoumbas was informed about the situation of the fire, about the destruction in the specific area, while his conversations with the residents highlighted the serious problems of prevention, the lack of fire fighting measures, the lack of water, the non-operation of the pumping stations that do not have generators, but also the power outage that has occurred since yesterday and is causing additional problems in the extinguishing work. In the ranks of the KKE, Themis Gionis, member of the PG of the KKE Central Committee, as well as Spyros Ilias, Marathon councilor with the “Popular Rally”, also participates.
During his presence there, Dimitris Koutsoubas made the following statement:
“The situation is very critical. What is urgent right now is to deploy all ground and air forces so as to put out all the fire fronts that are constantly rekindling. We are talking specifically about one area, this area here that is burning, which is the lung of the capital, of all of Attica, and from this point of view there should be continuous and permanent interest of all governments, the state, the current government and not just five or at and five, as now, but there had to be prevention, a comprehensive forest protection plan.
The area has burned many times, this forest wealth has been regenerated, but at the same time no measures have been taken, the necessary actions have not been taken, the actions that could protect this forest, this lung of our country. And from this point of view we say that all the forest roads should have been opened yesterday, the forest should have been cleared yesterday, all the machinery, the infrastructure, the necessary personnel should have been taken yesterday and the population should have been trained for such situations. Prevention is the main issue on this big front that we are discussing today.
The forces of the KKE and the KNE, its members, executives are since yesterday on all the fronts of the fire in order to limit the destruction, to save human lives, to save people’s property, to save the homes of our fellow human beings, to protect what they can from the environment, from this great environmental disaster that has taken place in this place. We are close to them. We will fight, we will push in all directions. These measures must be taken here and now, a plan drawn up now, which unfortunately does not yet exist, even at this last moment, to stop this entire front of the fire from destroying the environment, from destroying people’s lives and property”.
