The barn and its contents were destroyed. The farm was not affected by the fire. No injuries are reported.
The emergency services of Picardy Wallonia were alerted on Sunday, at 6:10 a.m., that a fire had broken out in a farm located along the road from Tournai to Ligne. Coming from the barracks of Leuze-en-Hainaut and Rebaix, a ladder truck, two pumpers, two tank trucks and a command vehicle were dispatched to the scene.
“When we arrived on site, the roof of the barn was already ablaze. It is a large building 60 meters long and 25 meters wide. Fortunately, this barn did not stick to the main building of the farm which did not suffer any damage”, explained around 8:30 a.m. Lieutenant Éric André, who led the intervention.
“The barn housed agricultural equipment and a reserve of hay and straw. The building was divided into three parts, which helped us. Ditto for the water supply, we did not encounter any difficulties. But the problem there was a semi-trailer on fire there. Nearby, there was acetylene… The extinction gave us a hard time and caused a lot of smoke”, specified the officer.
Did the fire start in the straw and hay or by the truck? This will be investigated, but it was too early to tell.
The firefighters proceeded in the morning to the evacuation and the spreading of the straw and the hay on a nearby meadow in order to extinguish it. “We are in control of the situation but the work is substantial. There are around thirty tonnes to be evacuated. We are trying to work as quickly as possible in order to prevent the smoke from disturbing the neighborhood”, further indicated the lieutenant. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
