The men, aged 41 and 43, are said to have broken into several basement compartments in an apartment building and made off with loot worth around 20,000 euros, the Lower Austria State Police Directorate reported on Tuesday. They were mainly after bicycles, e-scooters and tools.
Major operation in the Mödling district
When the suspects were arrested on Sunday morning, several patrols from the Mödling district police command, the Rapid Intervention Group (SIG), forces from the Wiener Neustadt police dog inspectorate, as well as a drone operator and a helicopter from the air police were deployed. The men from Slovakia had fled via balconies and then onto the roofs of the multi-unit complex.

Localized by air police
The 43-year-old was located with the help of the air police and arrested by SIG emergency services. He had sustained minor injuries and was eventually brought down from the roof of the building with the help of the Wiener Neudorf fire department and then cared for by the emergency services. The 41-year-old’s escape ended in a stairwell.
According to the police, stolen goods were prepared for transport. The perpetrators’ vehicle was found in the parking garage of the residential complex. It had license plates that had been reported stolen. The Slovakians, some of whom confessed, were taken to the Wiener Neustadt prison on the orders of the public prosecutor.
