A fire broke out on rue des Francs in Etterbeek, on the corner with avenue des Celtes, this Friday followingnoon. The firefighters dispatched two self-ladders and two Smur teams. At the time of writing these lines, firefighters were inspecting the roof of the building from which a large column of smoke was emerging. The firefighters installed on the other self-ladder were inspecting the roof of the neighboring building, the Polish consulate. During this time, firefighters inspected the interior of the building to verify that no one was there.
The firefighters had already evacuated a few people trapped in their apartment, including a baby. Three adults and a baby inhaled the smoke. They were evacuated to the hospital but their condition is not worrying.
The damaged accommodation suffered serious damage and is temporarily uninhabitable. “It was a fully developed fire in a studio, behind the facade, on the first floor of a two-storey house”, explained Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade. “Two adults and a baby were stranded on the second floor, due to smoke in the stairwell. They were evacuated via the self-ladder. Two other people got to safety on their own,” he specified.
One of these two people, as well as the three occupants of the second floor, inhaled smoke. They were all four evacuated to the hospital but their condition is not worrying, according to the firefighters.
As for the damaged studio, it is uninhabitable. Sibelga intervened, said Walter Derieuw.
The Montgomery Police District also went to the scene to set up a security perimeter allowing the firefighters to work.
For the record, this same building had caught fire three years ago. The fire had started in the kitchen of the cafe located on the ground floor. Here, the fire seems to come from the floors.
