Fiorentina loses 4-1 against Atalanta

Fiorentina fought Atalanta last night in the second leg of the Coppa Italia. Club’s opponent in the semi-final of the Conference League won the first leg 1-0 at home, but lost in the final match in Bergamo: 4-1 was the final score. At Atalanta, ex-Club player Charles De Ketelaere started in the starting line-up.

The match mightn’t have started better for Atalanta: following just eight minutes, Dutchman Teun Koopmeiners gave the home team the lead. The deficit from the first match was immediately erased in this way. Before the opening quarter had even been played, Atalanta climbed to a double lead. De Ketelaere served Scamacca who kicked the ball hard into the roof of the goal. However, following a VAR intervention, the goal was disallowed for an error that had occurred earlier during the attack. Koopmeiners had another great chance, but Terracciano made a good save. Afterwards, Fiorentina had possession of the ball, but they failed to create chances.

Only seven minutes into the second half when Fiorentina had to go down to ten due to a red card for Nikola Milenkovic. He took down the broken Scamacca. The free kick that followed ended up on the crossbar. It was Fiorentina that, once morest the flow of play, leveled in minute 68: Belotti painted a free kick on the head of Martinez Quarta. However, Fiorentina’s joy was short-lived. At the start of the final quarter, De Ketelaere delivered a cross with his head. Scamacca kicked the ball beautifully with a volley once morest the net. It looked like it would go to extra time, but Lookman didn’t count on that. Scamacca crowned his match with an assist and Lookman blasted the ball in low and over the corner. It wasn’t over yet: at the absolute end of extra time, Pasalic also managed to score. The assister this time was Lookman.

Atalanta will face Juventus in the final on May 15 at the Stadio Olimpico. Fiorentina, currently ninth in the standings, will face Sassuolo at home in the competition next Sunday.
