In the runoff election for the presidency in Finland on Sunday, the former conservative head of government Alexander Stubb and the Green ex-Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto will face each other. Stubb got 27.2 percent of the vote in the first round of voting two weeks ago, Haavisto got 25.8 percent. The election in the EU country Finland is taking place amid tensions with its neighbor Russia.
After the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine almost two years ago, Helsinki gave up its decades-long military non-alignment. In April 2023, Finland joined NATO.
