Finland: School shootings – 12-year-old injured peers – 2024-04-06 05:43:34

Three students were injured when a peer opened fire at the Viertola school in Vanda, Finland.

Finnish media, citing the police, report that for the time being the authorities will not comment further on how the bloody incident unfolded or how the 12-year-old got the gun. Police also did not provide further details on what type of firearm was used.

According to police, the victims suffered injuries that required hospital treatment.

Authorities raised the alarm shortly following 09:00 am (local time) when there was a report of gunfire. Heavily armed police began arriving at the school, urging citizens to stay indoors.

About an hour later, the authorities announced that there were injuries and the assailant had been arrested.

While students remained inside the classrooms of the school, which has approximately 800 children, parents began to arrive at the scene. As reported by IS journalist Lauri Silvander, the parents who arrived at the school are shocked. Some of them have been told that their child is safe, but others have no information.

According to iefimerida, an eyewitness who saw part of the incident told Iltalente that he was working nearby. According to him, a shot was heard shortly following 09:00.

“I mightn’t make the shot connection. Then there was a terrible scream and some children ran into the yard. It took a minute or two for several police cars, an ambulance to enter the forecourt,” he said.
