A nationwide energy-saving campaign officially kicked off in Finland on Monday. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, however, indicated that most Finns had already started to reduce their consumption during the summer.

Since the government unveiled details of its energy-saving campaign at the end of August, nearly nine in ten Finns have taken action to reduce their consumption, according to a Citizens’ Pulse survey published in September.

Fingrid, Finland’s main grid operator, recently reported that electricity consumption fell by 7% year-on-year in the month of September.

The campaign launched by the government, called “One degree less”, aims to encourage at least 95% of Finnish households to save energy in order to reduce electricity demand during peak hours. The government also aims to achieve a permanent reduction in energy consumption in Finland.

Kati Laakso, of Finnish sustainable energy company Motiva, meanwhile said that with winter fast approaching, “more effort would be needed from everyone”.
