Finland and Sweden officially apply for NATO membership

Finland and Sweden have officially applied for membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The Ambassadors of the two countries to NATO presented the Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, with the Letters of Intent from Helsinki and Stockholm.

Speaking to reporters, Stoltenberg noted that all countries have the right to determine their direction, welcoming such demands made.

He stressed that the membership of Sweden and Finland will strengthen NATO’s security.

“The steps you have taken today are historic,” Stoltenberg said. Allied states will now assess these requests. The security concerns of each of the allies must be taken into account. and to achieve a result, quickly.”

Stoltenberg concluded by stating that all Allied states agree on the need for NATO enlargement.
