Finland and Sweden, which border Russia, have begun the process of joining NATO in earnest.

Russia has temporarily shut down electricity supply to Finland, warning that giving up neutralism would be a mistake.

Finland, a Nordic country, shares a border with Russia for a whopping 1,300 km.

On the 15th local time, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) announced that it had decided to submit an application for membership.

After the invasion of Ukraine, public opinion in favor of NATO membership sharply shifted, declaring the renunciation of neutrality for the first time in 74 years.

“Today is a historic day. Finland will maximize national security.”

Sweden’s ruling party, the Social Democrats, also decided to support the government’s membership in NATO.

However, it added a proviso that it would reject the deployment of nuclear weapons or the long-term presence of NATO in the territory.

Russia warned that when both countries join NATO, the border between NATO and NATO will double, and Russia will immediately respond “including military and technical measures”.

The Kremlin said Putin had personally called the Finnish president and said that “abandoning neutralism would be a mistake”.

“NATO’s expansion doesn’t make continental Europe more stable and secure (as the West claims).”

In fact, on that day, the Russian state-owned energy company stopped supplying electricity to Finland.

On the surface, the reason was non-payment of electricity bills, but foreign media analyzed that it seemed to be a pressure to promote NATO membership.

In addition, Turkey, which has shown a negative stance on both countries’ accession to NATO, is expected to become a last-minute variable, unlike most member states.

Sweden is expected to submit an application for membership as early as the 16th, and Finland is also expected to submit an application for membership during this week.
