The ruling Social Democrats of Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin have the parliamentary elections in Finland lost on Sunday. The conservative National Coalition Party came out on top in Finland’s parliamentary elections for the first time in twelve years. Marin has now announced that he is leaving the Social Democrat party leadership, reports “YLE News”. She announced that she would still remain in the party as a “backroom deputy”.

Her successor will be elected at the next party congress in September. “I have had the great honor of leading the Board of Directors for the past four years. These times were extraordinarily difficult. It has to be said frankly that my own stamina and resilience have also been tested over the years,” Marin said at a press conference. She said she informed now to give possible candidates time to consider a possible candidacy for the party presidency.

Party video with Sanna Marin

This scandalous party video caused distress for Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin.

The 37-year-old said she would still negotiate for her party to participate in the government. She was not offered an international post, she said in response to speculation that she might seek a position in another European country following the election defeat. She is also not available as a candidate for the Finnish presidential elections in early 2024, in which a successor to President Sauli Niinistö is being sought.

Marin came to power at the end of 2019 as the youngest prime minister in the world at the time. Abroad, she is considered one of the most sought-following politicians in Europe, while at home many value her as a young, modern and quick-witted head of government. Party videos scratched her image, but she remained popular – significantly more popular than her party. Marin led Finland into NATO, and the country became official on Tuesday accepted as the 31st member.
