From now on, drivers in Florida who possess certain vehicle license plates could face penalties including fines for traffic violations.
This is a regulation additional fee set by the authorities that would also cost three points on your driver’s license.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) issued a statement highlighting that personalized license plates violate legal requirements set forth in state law.
According to the FLHSMV, these modifications affect reflectivity and road safety, and may also interfere with yellow validation stickers.
“It is illegal to drive on public roads with altered license plates, which violates Section 320.061 of the Florida Statutes,” authorities said.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) will be on the lookout for these violations and will be enforcing the law, displaying examples of altered license plates to illustrate the problem.
Since 2020, fines for illegal license plate tampering in Florida have increased by more than 98%.
The FLHSMV noted that drivers who wish to have personalized license plates can obtain them legally.
Florida offers more than 100 specialty license plate options representing a variety of organizations, and proceeds from these sales directly support related causes.
Additionally, personalized license plates can be ordered at a motor vehicle service center.
If a driver is unable to reverse an alteration to his or her license plate, he or she must apply for a new license plate at the local tax collector’s office.
FHP officers have the authority to seize any license plates they find altered.
