Fine Dying – Misschiefs September 7 and October 1 Swedish Institute
Today, Misschiefs pulverizes the angel with its FINE DYING exhibition, a diversion of the notion of Fine Dining, the refined art of the table. Presented from September 7 to October 1, 2023 by the Swedish Institute, the installation will mix the unique creations by nine artistsxs and designerxs.
In Sweden, design is a vast landscape of creation which also encompasses the fields of architecture, town planning, fashion and artistic craftsmanship. Internationally, he is both crowned with prestige and attached to certain clichés. We think of natural materials, clear and clean lines, functionality and accessibility. But there has long been an alternating current, particularly strong in the 1970s: playful and eccentric proposals, objects that resist. Today, Misschiefs revives this irreverent tradition and carries the voices of several generations of designers who seek to overthrow symbols and subvert propriety. What do they tell us regarding our societies, our humanities? Are they part of a global change? What is happening in France on that side? By presenting the FINE DYING exhibition, the Swedish Institute intends to show the diversity of contemporary design and serve as a meeting point between its many faces.
The FINE DYING exhibition by Misschiefs
“The Angel of the House”, by the poet Coventry Patmore, was inspired by his first wife, Emily Augusta Andrews, in whom he saw the ideal woman, a graceful, discreet and modest hostess. In a speech delivered in 1931 to the National Society for Women’s Service and published eleven years later under the title “Professions for women”, Virginia Woolf castigates this ideal of the Victorian woman and explains that she had to kill the angel. Creation involves sacrifice.
In 2021, six artists and designers are invited by Misschiefs to contribute to the FINE DYING collection, in reference to the thought of Virginia Woolf and the idea of Fine Dining, the refined art of the table. Anna Nordström, ButchXFemme, Isa Andersson, Lotta Lampa, Maria Pita Gerreiro and Sara Szyber then create unique, gothic, punk and flamboyant objects, which they place on a long table. Each piece, handcrafted in Sweden, is sold as a collector’s item: vase, lamp, candlestick, glass, tablecloth, placemat…
This evolving installation, first shown in Stockholm in 2021, then in Milan in 2022, arrives at the Swedish Institute in September 2023, with the additional participation of French multidisciplinary artist Popline Fichot. Two other artists, Yngvild Saeter of Norway and Klara Fahrman of Sweden, have also been invited by Misschiefs to present their work outside the bloody table.
The opening of the exhibition will be set to music by DJ MrMaqs and punctuated by performances by multidisciplinary artists Vera Jörgensen and Grebnellaw.

About the Swedish Institute, a little piece of Sweden in France
The only cultural center that Sweden has abroad, the Swedish Institute in Paris has been presenting a multidisciplinary program since 1971: art, design, music, cinema, literature… Housed in one of the most beautiful mansions in the Marais, the The Swedish Institute welcomes nearly 100,000 visitors every year for exhibitions, performances, concerts and meetings. The permanent art exhibition retraces in paintings, sculptures and engravings the Franco-Swedish relations of recent centuries. The garden offers a haven of peace punctuated with 20th century sculptures. On the courtyard side, the FIKA café offers a gourmet break away from the hustle and bustle of Paris. In fine weather, its leafy terrace is appreciated by local regulars, fashionistas and art lovers. At the same time, the Swedish Institute works on exchanges between France and Sweden, in particular with Swedish lessons and residences for researchers and artists living in Sweden.
