L’Usine Nouvelle – What role do the Wallenberg Foundations play in the innovation and success of Swedish industry?
Peter Wallenberg Jr – Initially, the foundations helped the universities for their buildings, then they installed equipment there. Today, we fund researchers. Historically we helped create the research infrastructure in Sweden, then we focused on basic research. Four-fifths of the dividends from companies owned by our sixteen foundations are distributed as grants and the rest is reinvested. Sweden is a small country with limited resources. We think it is important that the three worlds – academic, political and business – work together to make it internationally competitive. This is our main objective. Does this play into the success of Swedish industry? I hope so. But I believe that it is above all good for companies to have long-term, responsible shareholders, present in the bad as well as the good times. We work with each of those we have to ensure their digitization, their sustainability, consider their future in ten years, identify their future markets and their requirements. This is how we have participated in the success of Swedish industry.
