Research from the Wellbeing for Planet Earth (WPE) Foundation found that people can feel at peace even if what is around them is not, with the majority of people in 142 countries (61%) saying they often or They always feel inner peace in difficult times, while 80% feel in harmony with others.

The Wellbeing for Planet Earth (WPE) Foundation recently published the results of extensive research that was carried out in 142 countries. The findings are encouraging, especially in a world that seems to be constantly mired in conflict and challenges: most people have the ability to find peace within themselves, even when the environment around them is not peaceful.

Harmonic principles draw attention to historically overlooked experiences, such as feelings related to harmony and balance, as well as contentment and inner peace, and complement traditionally established models of subjective well-being.

The study, conducted in 142 countries through the Gallup World Poll in 2022, concludes that the majority of the world’s population (80%) “always” or “often” feels in harmony with others.

The feeling of balance is not as common as that of harmony: just over half worldwide feel that the different aspects of their life are in balance (59%), compared to 39% who do not feel it.

Harmony and balance are positively associated with global metrics used by policymakers around the world, such as the Human Development Index (HDI) and the Social Progress Index (SPI).

The most striking demographic differences are related to socioeconomic level. Among people who find it very difficult to live on their current income, more than half say they often feel stable and secure in their lives (55%), happy (52%), and that their thoughts and feelings are in harmony ( 56%), compared to 87%, 86% and 81% among those who live comfortably.

People with higher educational levels are also more likely to regularly experience experiences related to balance and harmony.

These findings challenge the popular perception that internal peace and harmony are the direct result of peaceful external circumstances. Rather, they suggest that peace is an internal choice that can be cultivated regardless of external circumstances.

“These data are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and our inherent ability to find balance and peace, even in the midst of the storm,” said Dr. Anita Rivas, a principal investigator at the WPE Foundation. “It shows us that while external circumstances play a role, true peace begins from within.”

Furthermore, the study suggests that there is a sense of global unity in how people perceive and experience peace and harmony. Despite cultural, geographic and socioeconomic differences, a vast majority feel a connection and harmony with others.

“This study offers us hope,” says Rivas. “It reminds us that, despite the discouraging news and events that often dominate the headlines, there is a deep, universal capacity for love, connection and inner peace.”

The WPE Foundation hopes that these results will inspire individuals and communities to invest more in promoting emotional and mental well-being, recognizing that, despite external challenges, each individual has the power to cultivate peace from the inside out.
