Finding a Solution for the Canadian’s Three-Goalie Dilemma

2023-10-17 12:59:07

Right now, the Canadian is stuck in a three-goalie system. Samuel Montembeault, Jake Allen and Cayden Primeau are there and they (logically) all want to play.

It’s in the nature of players, clearly.

Remember that Jake Allen played the first game of the season in Toronto. It didn’t go very well… even if the conditions weren’t optimal for him.

It didn’t take much for the fans to demand his Quebec counterpart in front of the net for the next game. And that’s what happened.

Samuel Montembeault was entitled to the first home game, against Chicago. He did better than Allen, especially when you consider the fact that the club didn’t help him much with numerous penalties.

Is he the one who will be there this evening? We might think so, but we’ll see later today.

And then, taken behind the two regulars, there is Cayden Primeau. We know that the cerberus is currently in Montreal because the Canadian does not want to lose him on waivers.

But do CH intend to play him in the short term? The question is valid. Éric Fichaud thinks nothis.

In fact, the CH is in an impasse. He does not want, like four other clubs in the NHL, to lose a goaltender, which means that he does not submit the name of Cayden Primeau to waivers.

And in the meantime… well, time passes.

We agree that if Primeau does not play for a certain time (not even as second goalie), he could be sent to the American League for two weeks, like Shane Wright last year.

But we also agree that it is a temporary solution. Kent Hughes isn’t going to do that five times this year either…

I’m not saying that we’re going to have to resolve this quickly at all costs, but let’s say that, in an ideal world, this should not become a hot potato for Martin St-Louis and (especially) for the three main stakeholders. .

But Kent Hughes (who might be more patient than you think) knows very well that teams are just waiting for Primeau to be available via waivers. Kevin Weekes yesterday confirmed that teams are keeping an eye on several options, including young Cayden Primeau.

This morning, on BPM Sports, Renaud Lavoie affirmed that the Lightning were not the only team looking for help in front of the net at the moment.

With Weekes talking about “teams” looking for help, it’s clear the goalie market is on hold. As soon as a club moves via waiver, teams like the Lightning will be moved.

Unless, obviously, you submit a player who has a big contract. But I think we understood each other.

Weekes, who has touted Primeau’s AHL, NCAA and junior history, knows better than anyone that there is upside (i.e. trump cards) in friend Primeau’s game.

And at the price he earns ($890,000 per year for two years), he can help out and become a good option in the NHL.

Primeau just has to hope, at this point, that he’ll be able to play somewhere soon. After all, right now it’s not fun for him to always be with Justin Barron among the club extras.
