Most people over the age of 60 suffer from diverticular disease of the colon, also known as diverticulosis, which is characterized by the formation of small pockets in the walls of the colon. A nutritionist warned regarding the foods that can perforate the intestine of those who suffer from this ailment.
At least 80% of cases of diverticulosis have no symptoms and this increases the risk of damaging the intestine with the wrong foods. The dietitian and gastroenterologist Nuria Dianova explained that people who suffer from this disease should be more careful with what they eat, as certain foods are capable of perforating the large intestine.
“When consuming seeds, nuts, wholemeal bread and cabbage, the thick fibers can end up in these diverticula. It is necessary to chew them well,” explained the specialist in time to remember that in certain cases, they can cause “inflammation, pain and even perforations.”
According to the expert, the kiwi, which is rich in vitamins and minerals, can also represent a danger for those who suffer from diverticulosis, since its small seeds are not digested and are capable of plugging the diverticula.
