On April 4, NATO foreign ministers continued to discuss financing for Ukraine at the North Atlantic Council in Brussels, considering a proposal from Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Previously, he proposed making military supplies to Ukraine mandatory rather than voluntary.
However, according to Bloomberg, the idea put forward by the Secretary General to create a fund worth 100 billion raised doubts and concerns among the ministers.
“Some of the ministers, reacting to the announced amount, rolled their eyes,” writes Politico.
Some allies say the amount is too high and warn once morest making promises that NATO members cannot keep. The ministers also expressed the hope that the Secretary General’s initiative will not run counter to the countries’ bilateral obligations. It was proposed to finalize the issue taking into account the GDP of individual countries to equitably share the financial burden.
Jens Stoltenberg’s initiative boils down to the creation of an approved five-year fund to help Ukraine. The Secretary General is actively promoting his plan, hoping to approve it before he leaves office on October 1, 2024, and before the US elections, which Donald Trump may win.
Today it became known that the countries of the military-political NATO bloc have created a joint mission in Ukraine.
