When your alarm goes off in the morning, your first instinct is to delay the ringing for a few minutes… And go back to sleep! Previous studies have assured that using the “snooze” button might have negative effects on sleep and cognitive processes. A new study conducted by the psychology department at Stockholm University should reassure you. The results show that those who regularly use the snooze button may be more mentally alert when they get up following that quick nap. These findings were published in the Journal of Sleep Research.

« The nap had no negative effects on cortisol release, morning fatigue, mood or sleep quality throughout the night,” summarizes Tina Sundelin, researcher at Stockholm University and lead author of the article. This study was carried out in two stages. In the first study, 1,732 people answered questions regarding their morning habits. In the second study, 31 people spent two nights in a sleep laboratory. One morning they were allowed to nap for 30 minutes and the other morning they had to get up when the alarm went off.

“Our study shows that a half-hour nap has no negative effects on nighttime sleep or the feeling of not being fully alert in the morning. On the contrary, we observed positive results, such as a decreased likelihood of waking up. When the participants were allowed to take a nap, they also thought a little faster as soon as they got up,” emphasizes Tina Sundelin.
