The member survey in the SPÖ regarding the party chairmanship and top candidate in the upcoming national elections ends on Wednesday. It is the last day on which the approximately 148,000 members can announce in writing or (until midnight) online whether they prefer the incumbent Pamela Rendi-Wagner, the Burgenland governor Hans Peter Doskozil or the Traiskirchen mayor Andreas Babler. The result should be available in regarding two weeks.
Specifically, the electoral commission will meet on May 22 to evaluate the votes that have been submitted. Rendi-Wagner and Doskozil have made it clear that they will accept the members’ vote even if none of the applicants receive an absolute majority. Babler, in turn, would also run as second or third in the member survey at the party conference scheduled for early June, should the gap to the first be small.
The outcome of the vote is open, even if Rendi-Wagner and Doskozil are traded as easy favorites within the party. The incumbent is the candidate of the party establishment, but is also held in high esteem by women and older members. Doskozil, who is assigned to the right wing of the party on immigration issues, should do well in rural areas, while Babeler should be able to count on young and predominantly left-wing members. The decisive factor is which camp was able to mobilize best.
