Meta’s VR headset now has a new string to its bow for those who want to (re)discover their game library in virtual reality.
The Meta Quest may be a commercial hit, but it is a proprietary headset so certain limitations can be annoying. In this case, its relative compatibility with Steam (the store of jeux most popular PC) can be seen as a hindrance. Fortunately, Steam Link is now compatible with virtual reality headsets of Meta, including the recently released Meta Quest 3.

What is Steam Link?
If the name of the application is not unfamiliar to you, it’s only natural. On the market for years now, Steam Link allows you to stream a game being played on your PC to another device. For example: a smartphone, a tablet, or a TV. A solution which therefore seems ideal for streaming VR Steam games on your Meta Quest. And that’s good, since the application Steam Link has just arrived on the official store.
Once installed, the application works very simply. You will need to make sure you have the latest version of Steam, and Steam VR, on your computer, and follow the pairing procedure between the computer and the headset via the Steam Link application. Once connected, the headset will simply display the Steam user interface, which can be navigated exactly like on a computer.
Steam Link therefore opens access to Steam VR games (like the unmissable Half-Life Alyx), but also allows you to play any game from your game library in your VR headset (but in 2D, obviously).
A good connection essential
The more tech-savvy in the audience will recognize that this is nothing new. In fact, Meta has been maintaining Air Link for several years now, an application allowing you to use your computer (and by extension Steam) in your VR headset, wirelessly. As we said in the preamble, this is more of a new string to the Meta Quest bow than a real novelty. Furthermore, tests will show whether one of the two protocols performs better than the other for games.
Still, to take advantage of it in good conditions, it is better to make sure you have both a powerful computer (an RTX 2070 and 16 GB of RAM are recommended), but also a solid internet connection. A fiber connection is mandatory, and wifi 6 or even 6th is recommended to get the most out of the experience. In case of a poor connection, one can expect degraded graphics, interference or latency. A devastating cocktail to break the immersion promised by virtual reality.
