Austria’s handball men are warming up once morest Iceland for the EURO in Germany. Women’s coach Müller has to leave following 20 years.
Austria’s handball fans can look forward to two major events this year. Both the men’s and women’s national teams are taking part in the European Championships this year. This has never happened before. For the men, the final preparation phase for the EURO in Germany has long since begun. For the women, whose home European Championships don’t start until the end of November, the year started with a bang. The ÖHB surprisingly ended its collaboration with Herbert Müller, who led the women as team boss for almost 20 years.
On May 26, 2004, the German of Romanian origin was on the sidelines for the first time as team boss in the friendly international match once morest Slovenia. Since then he has accompanied the women’s team to five world championships and three European championships. At the end of last year he achieved promotion to the main round with the ÖHB selection at the World Cup in Scandinavia. After a detailed analysis of the tournament, which ended in 19th place, the association decided to restart.
“Herbert Müller deserves a big thank you for his commitment, which went far beyond his role as team boss. We made this decision together with a heavy heart, but we came to the conclusion with him that a new impulse was needed in the national team,” explains ÖHB- President Markus Plazer. Müller also showed greatness when he left. “I support this decision, but at the same time I am proud and grateful for the past two decades and everything we have achieved together,” emphasized the 61-year-old, who also coaches the German Bundesliga club Thüringer HC. Who will succeed Europe’s longest-serving women’s team boss should be decided at the beginning of February.
Austria’s men’s team has been preparing for the European Championships in Germany since December 26th (with a few days off around the turn of the year). After the 32:33 defeat at the end of the year once morest Slovenia, Aleš Pajovič’s team still has friendly games once morest Iceland on Saturday and Monday. Then we move on to Mannheim, where Austria meets Romania, Croatia and Spain in the preliminary round. “Now it’s important that we get better as a team little by little so that we can be where we want to be when the EURO starts,” explains Austria’s team captain Mykola Bilyk.
