Filming of “Rust”: the weapon could not have fired without the trigger being pressed

The weapon used in the shooting that claimed the life of the cinematographer on the set of the film Rust would not have fired without pulling the trigger, according to a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) forensic report obtained by ABC News.

Actor Alec Baldwin had the gun drawn when he shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins last year. He thought he was then handling a pistol without live ammunition.

The gun used, a Colt 45-caliber single-action F.lli Pietta revolver, might not have fired without the trigger being pulled, the FBI report revealed.

The weapon might not be fired if the hammer was in the position of quarter and half-cocked or fully cocked.

If the hammer had been decocked on a loaded chamber, the revolver would have been able to detonate a primer “without pulling the trigger when the hammer was struck directly”, it was specified.

Last December, Alec Baldwin said in an ABC interview that he had not pulled the trigger on the gun.

“The trigger was not pressed,” he argued. “I didn’t pull the trigger.”

This forensic report is part of a criminal investigation into the reasons for the shooting on set. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office is leading the homicide investigation.
