The 32-year-old native of Pennsylvania in the US holds the world record for watching the most films in a year. A young man named Zachariah Swope has achieved this extraordinary feat. During the 12-month period from May 2022 to May 2023, Swope spent most of his time at the Regal Cinema Theater. He watched a total of 777 films during this period. Swope’s movie marathon includes a wide variety of movies, starting with Minions: Rise of Gruel and ending with Indiana Jones and Dial of Destiny.
To celebrate his achievement, Regal Cinemas presented him with an award and donated $7,777.77 (approximately Rs. 6 lakh) to the American Federation for Suicide Prevention. Breaking the existing Guinness World Record (GWR) was not an easy task and Swope attempted it with strict guidelines. To qualify for the record, he had to watch each film in its entirety, without engaging in other activities. Do not use phone, eat or drink while watching movie. Swope was closely monitored by staff to make sure he followed all the rules.
Zachariah Swope’s working hours are from 6:45 AM to 2:45 PM. It was during this time that he took up this challenge. He would watch up to three films every evening and devote more time to this on weekends. Swope took up the challenge to raise awareness regarding autism among people, he told Guinness World Records, ‘I am a suicide survivor. It was an amazing journey, I dedicated a year of my life to it, and it was all for a good cause. “I will try to break my own record once more,” said Swope.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish 47 times, The Super Mario Bros. 35 times, and Thor: Love and Thunder 33 times are some of the movies he has watched more than once. But his favorite movie was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Zakaria surpassed the previous record of 716 set by France’s Vincent Crone in 2018. Initially, Zachariah Swope had a goal in mind of watching 800 movies in a year. But with the passage of time, it was not possible to arrive at that exact number. Due to this, he decided to end the mission with the lucky number 777.
