One of the biggest criticisms of e-mobility is the disposal of used e-car batteries. Research is currently being carried out around the world on a wide range of recycling systems, including in Gurten.
A consortium consisting of the mechanical engineering expert Fill, the Graz University of Technology, the AVL and the automobile cluster is developing solutions for the cost-efficient recycling of battery systems.
Research project “Battbox”
The research project called “BattBox” aims for multi-stage recycling concepts. Due to the lack of standardization in chemistry, design and decomposability, the project partners will develop a wide range of possible processes. “Diagnostics and disassembly of the exposed components are carried out at each process stage and checked for economic and safety-critical aspects,” reports Josef Ecker, project manager at Fill. This structured approach is intended to develop processes for obtaining high-quality, pure raw materials with the best possible reusability. “BattBox” is rated as pioneering by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and is funded with 1.4 million euros – with a total project size of almost two million euros.
