Filip Mesar: A Rising Prospect in the Montreal Canadiens Organization

2023-09-06 13:45:48

If there’s one prospect I’m looking forward to following this season, it’s Owen Beck. It’s David Reinbacher. It’s Jacob Fowler. It’s… multiple guys at once. I’m not going to name them all.

But the name of Filip Mesar does not come to mind quickly.

Attention: I am not saying that I gave up on the case of the young man. After all, it would be really, really unfair to give up on a 19-year-old after a more ordinary season.

That said, he is not the first player that comes to mind among the club’s hopefuls. His season of less than a point per game in the OHL is not the most extraordinary that I have ever seen. It wasn’t horrible, but it had its tough times.

He left for Kitchener with the disappointment of not staying in Laval and it shows.

And there, this year, he keeps repeating that he wants to be in Laval. I don’t know if it will happen for sure, but this is once again what he repeated to Simon-Olivier Lorange on the sidelines of showcase of the NHL.

I don’t think one more year in junior would hurt him. Dominating a league (or putting yourself in a position to dominate) has never been bad for a player… and I don’t think he can do it at Laval.

But that’s presumably the plan.

The Canadiens’ coaches, as reported by La Presse, want to see Mesar play “in a big league” in 2023-2024. I think that means the AHL because I don’t see him going back to Europe.

His plan is also to compete in the World Junior Championship for a third and final time. He believes that with Simon Nemec and Dalibor Dvorsky, the Slovaks could surprise.

That said, he doesn’t expect Juraj Slafkovsky to join the band in Gothenburg, Sweden. He thinks like many people on this one.

Mesar’s training camp will be important to put in the minds of people like me that yes, he can indeed do well in Laval and that he can regain his place as an important prospect. And I just want to be proven wrong.
