The General Prosecutor’s Office has requested the lifting of the parliamentary immunity of Filip Dewinter (Vlaams Belang) because of a traffic offence. The politician crossed a traffic light four seconds following it turned red, in Zelzate (East Flanders). Filip Dewinter announced the news himself on Friday on X (formerly Twitter) and the prosecution confirmed the information.

The Flemish parliamentarian published on X a photo of his minutes accompanied by the comment: “The Ghent public prosecutor’s office requests the lifting of my parliamentary immunity because… I went through red at 27 km/h, without accident, without being under the influence of alcohol, no criminal record… nothing! After 42 years of driving, sorry but it can happen. An amicable settlement might have been arranged and that would have saved a lot of costs. »

The report specifies that Dewinter crossed a traffic light 4.2 seconds following it turned red, on July 29 at 5:07 p.m. on the John F. Kennedylaan in the direction of Ghent. The parliamentarian was driving a Maserati.

Running a red light is a 3rd degree offence. A lifting of the parliamentary immunity of Filip Dewinter is necessary so that he can appear before the police court. The Flemish parliament will have to decide on this waiver of immunity. They are generally granted in the event of traffic offences. In the event of conviction, Filip Dewinter risks a fine of up to 4,000 euros.
