File Explorer in Windows 11 will get tabs and other improvements

Microsoft has announced a number of interesting innovations for Windows 11 File Explorer. This tool will receive an updated design with support for tabs, which will make it easier to quickly access folders and files, as well as a redesigned Share dialog, integration with OneDrive, and more. Changes have been announced at today’s online event that Microsoft dedicated to hybrid work.

Microsoft has confirmed that File Explorer will get a tabbed interface, which has been tested in Windows 10 since the introduction of the Sets tool, which allows you to group applications as tabs in a single window. However, the development of this feature was stopped, which is why it was never made available to the public. At this stage, it is difficult to say when the Windows 11 File Explorer tabbed interface will be available to ordinary users, since it is currently hidden in some test builds of the operating system.

Also in the “Explorer” there is a new home page with pinned files and recent actions. Users will be able to easily pin the desired files to the File Explorer home page using the context menu that appears when right-clicking on the desired file. Along with this, there will be new opportunities in terms of file sharing through the Share dialog, as well as deeper integration with the OneDrive cloud service.

Microsoft did not specify when exactly the mentioned innovations will become available to a wide range of Windows 11 users. It is possible that they will be distributed along with the 22H2 functional update, which is due to be released this fall.
