A month before the decision on UNESCO designation, SPÖ Vienna sends an unsettling message to the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh.

Vienna (OTS) “One month before the decision on the World Heritage status for Vienna’s historic city center, the SPÖ Vienna sends a questionable signal to the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh. The indifferent position of the SPÖ Vienna might convey to the committee that the world cultural heritage is not important for Vienna. But that’s not the case – especially for the inner city it’s almost indispensable,” says the district manager of the inner city, MMag. Markus Figl.

Just two weeks ago, UNESCO issued the sobering draft decision – Vienna should remain on the Red List of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The negligent behavior of the city government to date has meant that, according to the draft decision, Vienna will not be removed from the Red List in September.

About a month before the decisive meeting, the SPÖ Vienna came up with the questionable attitude: the loss of the world cultural heritage no broken leg. “Sending such a statement to UNESCO at this point in time confirms the previously negligent attitude of the SPÖ Vienna to the protection of world cultural heritage and shows the ignorance of the warning shot that UNESCO issued with the draft decision,” District Mayor Figl continues.

Without the protection of the world cultural heritage, there is a greater risk that the inner city will lose its authenticity. The World Heritage status enables high quality buildings in the inner city and preserves the public perception of the urban space and our landmarks. So far, the inner city’s World Heritage status has proven to be an important tool for preserving the unique flair of the city center as far as possible. This flair is an important part of the character and identity of the inner city.
