The Ministry of the Interior and Police and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) reported yesterday that 67% of the homicides that occur in the country are caused by fights, quarrels and domestic violence.
According to studies carried out by both institutions, the high rate of violence that results in homicides is due to the lack of public policies that encourage problem solving through dialogue.
“This points to the need to strengthen the culture of peace and expand the mechanisms for the prevention and peaceful resolution of conflicts at the community level,” explained Rebecca Latorraca, director of USAID in the Dominican Republic, during the presentation of the results of the studies. at a press conference.
As explained by the director, through a campaign called “We are Dominicans, we want to live in peace”, the need for peaceful coexistence and the shared responsibility of all members of society will be promoted, to avoid acts of violence. This campaign aims to raise awareness and prevent domestic violence once morest women and girls, caused by personal conflicts such as noise pollution, disrespect for traffic regulations, among others. Regarding the percentage of homicides caused by violence, the Minister of the Interior and Police, Jesús Vásquez, recognized the inability that exists in society to resolve local conflicts non-violently, for which he considered an “imperative need” to work to promote the dialogue.
