[메디컬투데이=조민규 기자] Research has shown that obesity rates have increased rapidly due to fructose in many foods.

A study published in ‘Obesity’ found that fructose was the cause of the rapid increase in obesity rates.

Obesity is a condition in which there is excessive fatty tissue in the body and is defined as obesity if the body mass index, which is calculated by dividing body weight by the square of height, is 25 or more. Obesity is known to increase the incidence of sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Recent studies have also shown that obesity can increase the risk of developing cancer and is also linked to digestive problems, skin disorders and mental health.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the obesity rate has tripled since 1975, and 13% of adults worldwide are currently classified as obese. Various hypotheses have been proposed as the cause of this rapid increase in obesity rates.

Researchers proposed the fructose survival hypothesis as the cause of the increase in global obesity rates. When food is consumed, it is digested and converted into an energy source in the form of ATP in mitochondria and provided to cells. Fructose also goes through a similar path, but the conversion is known to be faster.

The researchers noted that excessive consumption of fructose creates excess energy, which is stored as fat and causes obesity. They also added that fructose increases hunger and promotes cravings for energy-rich foods, which accelerates weight gain.

The researchers pointed out that fructose is mainly contained in carbonated drinks, bread, cereals, and fast foods, and that most foods that modern people find flavorful contain fructose. Additionally, the researchers emphasized that fructose intake should be controlled through a balanced diet to maintain a healthy weight and be wary of obesity.
