Fighting mental illness by reducing its ecological footprint: a researcher kills two birds with one stone

A researcher from Glasgow, Scotland has developed the first activity prescription program to combat mental illness while dramatically reducing the pollution caused by the concoction of pharmaceutical pills.

The “blue-green prescription” program aims to encourage activities in blue spaces, such as kayaking or swimming, which go a long way in reducing the effects of anxiety and depression without employing medication, reported “The Herald»r Tuesday.

“The Blue-Green prescription is a response to pharmaceutical pollution. This will help reduce it directly at the source by providing an environmentally friendly health intervention instead,” said researcher Jules Alejandre, from Glasgow Caledonian University.

According to one study, pharmaceutical concoctions account for 25% of carbon emissions in the UK health network.

Their presence in water, due to the excessive use of drugs, would also contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistance, that is to say when a bacterium, a virus, a fungus or a parasite manages to evolve to survive the antibiotics and become more difficult to treat.

Thus, the blue-green prescriptions would give access to those who suffer from anxiety or depression to various outdoor sporting activities through various social programs.

“If they need to, they can also be prescribed medication or antidepressants which are less harmful to the environment and which remain clinically safe and effective,” he added.

He thus invites healthcare centers to follow suit and join his program in an attempt to prescribe a more “sustainable” model of care, which can be adapted to each patient.
