Russia had already announced a change in strategy on Friday: the army now wants to focus on the “liberation” of the Donbass in eastern Ukraine, according to Russian Deputy Chief of Staff Sergei Rudskoy.
The first goals of the military “special operation” in Ukraine have been achieved. This announcement might indicate that Russia may now be moving to more limited targets.
Mariupol, meanwhile, remains one of the hardest fought cities in the Ukraine war. There are still tens of thousands in the city. It also became known that around 300 people might have been killed in the Russian attack on a theater in Mariupol last week.
UN investigates war crimes
The European Union accuses Russia of committing war crimes in Ukraine. Russia is attacking the civilian population, targeting hospitals, schools and shelters, among other things. The UN Human Rights Office is also investigating reports of war crimes on both the Russian and Ukrainian sides.
US President Joe Biden wants to get an idea of the situation during a visit to Poland. He thanked the US soldiers stationed 90 kilometers from the Ukrainian border for their commitment. A speech in Warsaw is planned for Saturday.
