The Ouagadougou Karité Lions Club organized, on Saturday November 26, 2022, a public conference on breast cancer at the premises of the University of African Unity (formerly IAM). According to club president Saidou Tiendrébéogo, the initiative is part of his program to fight this disease.
The Lions of Ouagadougou Karité are working to fight once morest breast cancer. It is in this context that they held, on Saturday November 26, 2022, a public conference at the University of African Unity (ex-IAM) to discuss the subject.
The purpose of the activity, according to club president Saidou Tiendrébéogo, “was to explain to participants what breast cancer is, to show women how to be screened very early in order to find adequate care at a lower cost. to counter it.” To meet this challenge, Ouagadougou Karité called on experts on the subject to talk to the participants. They are Pr Charlemagne Ouédraogo, Dr Michel Ilboudo and Pr Nayi Zongo.
The speakers broached the subject of breast cancer with the audience for approximately two hours. The three proceeded with presentations presented in easy French and in Mooré (local language) with supporting figures and images. They explained, among other things, the risk factors for the disease, its diagnosis and the therapeutic strategies to counter it.
The communicators insisted on the risk factors of breast cancer, recalling that the latter is not a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) unlike cancer of the cervix, but can be caused by factors such as diet high in fat and low in vegetables, alcohol abuse, lack of breastfeeding, family history…
Taking stock of this disease, Professor Charlemagne Ouédraogo indicated that more than two million cases of breast cancer were detected worldwide in 2020. In Burkina Faso, around 2,000 cases of breast cancer were detected. listed on the 12,000 cases of all cancers combined, he said.
Dr. Michel Ilboudo confided that in Burkina Faso, 70% of cases of breast cancer are detected at an advanced stage where cure is no longer certain. “Late diagnoses are partly due to ignorance, to the limited means for many affected people to do the various examinations that the nursing staff has prescribed,” he explained.
Facing the public Charlemagne Ouédraogo noted that breast cancer is certainly “a serious disease”, but the vital prognosis is favorable if the disease is detected very early. “This makes it possible to achieve a cure whose rate varies between 75 and 100%”. “But when this diagnosis is late, the treatment will be palliative and life expectancy will be short,” he reminded participants. The former Minister of Health thus invited the population to participate in screening and early diagnosis campaigns to promote an effective fight once morest the disease.
The President of Ouagadougou Karité, Saidou Tiendrébéogo, assured that beyond this general public conference, screening and awareness days at different centers and markets are also planned, reaffirming his club’s commitment to the fight once morest this disease from which many women in Burkina Faso suffer.
