Fiftieth summer film school. Or the sixtieth?

That’s why everyone who has been active so far will receive an annual award this year as well. It’s a nice gesture that the festival staff wants to pay tribute to all organizers and members of Czech film clubs, a phenomenon that is unique even on a European scale.

It will be celebrated in Uherské Hradiště. A strong line-up of world creators who have already been here, but are happy to return, will come to the joint merenda. Specifically: Fridrik Thór Fridriksson from Iceland, Mohsen Makhmalbaf from Iran, Portuguese Pedro Costa, and two Britons: Peter Strickland and Sean Ellis. All of them will present their films, as well as the film opus that each of them has nominated for a kind of wild card, i.e. a picture of world cinema important to them for various reasons. The South Moravian event thus promises a unique film party.

Prizes for Czech celebrities, one of them unfortunately already posthumous

Of course, the summer film school will also be full of famous filmmakers from our pond. The award will go to Mr. Jiří Suchý and in memoriam Jan Kačer. There is no need to talk about their meaning. Suchý is a versatile personality whose tentacles powerfully embrace the field of film, and Jan Kačer was one of our most respected actors and directors for many decades. Jiří Suchý will present, among other things, his film Walking the Entrance or Stop Standing, a charming film that was made “self-help” during covid in his apartment. It is an originally conceived autobiography, through military regimes, soldiers, garrisons, wars and other conflicts. By the way – the famous theater actor, singer-songwriter, artist and filmmaker is preparing a free sequel, where he recapitulates his life through music. Jan Kačer was originally supposed to come to Uherské Hradiště, and according to his daughter, he was looking forward to coming here, but unfortunately he left us in May this year. His daughter, actress Adéla Kubačáková, will receive the award.

Not just celebrations

In addition to the celebrations, the audience will not miss out on well-established and popular sections, and of course not even on a great accompanying program. In the Icon section this year, Filmovka will be devoted to David Lynch, in addition to this, silent films by the famous Japanese director Yasujiro Ozuha with special accompaniment, or the trilogy by the equally famous Bengali artist Satyajit Raj from the 1950s will also shine. The festive opening of the festival will be provided by Šimon Holé’s new film Hello, Welcome, followed by Jiří Mádl’s Wave. Concerts by the bands Tata Bojs and Alois Göbel, and singer Jana Kirschner will also be exceptional.

And last but not least: Český rozhlas Vltava will also contribute with its (as always big) little bit to the mill. He prepared several programs for the Czech Radio tent, for example, a live recording of the program Vizitka or listening to programs across the Vltava scheme. Come and take a look at our radio kitchen!
