Fifth Annual Femme in STEM Event at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher

The Aquarium team hopes to get more people interested in STEM fields to help solve the complex problems facing our environment.

Fort Fisher, NC – The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is preparing to celebrate the fifth edition of its annual event Femme in STEMwhich will take place on Saturday, September 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This event is critical for the Aquarium because it allows young girls to see people like them in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. Research shows that starting in high school, girls begin to lose interest in science and other STEM subjects. Femme in STEM seeks to reverse this trend by showcasing the variety of fields and career paths in STEM, while visitors interact with professionals already working in these areas.

Last year, Femme in STEM brought together 21 organizations and 80 exhibitors, who interacted with 1,800 visitors at the Aquarium.

This event, which has gained popularity among both exhibitors and visitors, offers unique experiences, such as the opportunity to dive with a diver in a 235,000-gallon habitat, turn on a light bulb by touching your nose or feel the shell of a sea turtle.

The main objective of Femme in STEM is to spark interest in the world around us and how we study and learn more about it. The Aquarium team hopes to get more people interested in STEM fields to help solve the complex problems facing our environment.

“Our focus at the Aquarium is saving species, and the people doing that work are in STEM fields,” the organizers note.
