This 2023 edition coincides with a symbolic jubilee, the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 36 films et 21 debates are on the program and, for the first time, three events dedicated to young audiences from 6 years old are offered.
Promoting human rights
International, multicultural city, seat of many governmental and non-governmental organizations, Geneva has placed, for many years, the defense of human rights as one of the cardinal values of its political action. At its own level, the municipality intends to work for a fairer and more egalitarian world, where people are at the center of a society that develops in a socially and ecologically sustainable way, with respect for fundamental rights for everyone.
Support for associations
The City of Geneva supports many quality projects that deal with the promotion of human rights and the protection of human rights defenders (HRD), whether in Switzerland or abroad. Throughout the world, HRDs are committed in particular to peace, democracy, justice and the environment. These commitments are essential but also risky.
To deal with threats and sometimes violent acts that can put their lives in danger, HRDs need concrete help. To this end, for example, the City supports Peace Brigade International (PBI), a non-governmental organization that sets up teams of volunteers to deter violence once morest HRDs, while respecting the principles of non-violence, impartiality and non-interference. PBI is active in several countries and in particular in Guatemala where the NGO accompanies HRDs who fight for the territorial and environmental rights of disadvantaged indigenous populations, often targets of defamation campaigns, persecuted and even killed (15 murders in 2020 ).
Public awareness
Raising awareness among the Geneva public of human rights and the violations of which those who defend them are victims constitutes another major component of the support of the City of Geneva. The City supports or organizes various events in Geneva, some of which have become regular events, such as the Terre des Hommes Walk of Hopethe festivals Filming in Latin Americathe Martin Ennals Prize and of course the FIFDH.
