Four days following the elimination of Germany in the first round of the World Cup in Qatar, Oliver Bierhoff (54) has drawn the consequences. The manager leaves the Federation following 18 years of service.
The two parties have agreed on a termination of the contract which ran until 2024. The authorities of the DFB will discuss the settlement of the succession. The consequences of this resignation for Hansi Flick’s future as coach are unclear at this time.
Bierhoff arrived at the DFB in 2004, in a position that had never existed before within the federation. As team manager, he played a major role, alongside coach Jürgen Klinsmann, in the fairy tale of summer at the World Cup on home soil two years later (3rd place).
He, a former player, decisive in particular at Euro 1996, created an atmosphere of renewal around the DFB team which finally culminated in the triumph of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with Joachim Löw as coach.
