Probably the best World Cup final ever between France and Argentina is only a few days old. Fifa is already making plans for upcoming tournaments.
THAT would be a World Cup hammer!
According to English media reports, Fifa boss Gianni Infantino (52) is aiming to change the World Cup cycle from a four to a three-year cycle.
A World Cup every three years?
As the “Daily Mail” and “Guardian” unanimously report, Infantino is working behind the scenes on a revolution from the year 2030.
Some kind of compromise for Infantino’s two-year plan, which has been severely criticized and thrown overboard?
In 2021, the mega-revolution met with massive resistance, especially from the league bosses from Europe. There were even threats of leaving FIFA. So now the new proposal, which might apply from 2030.
Since the general schedule for the years up to 2030 is largely in place, a cycle change should only be conceivable from this point in time.
It is unclear how the associations will react to this plan and whether criticism will hail once more.
There have been many discussions regarding hosting the World Cup in the past. Spectators and players can already expect changes at the next World Cup.
48 teams (16 from Europe, nine from Africa, eight from Asia, six from South America, six from North and Central America and the Caribbean, one from Oceania and two play-off winners).
Group mode is still being discussed.
In January 2017, Fifa actually decided that the World Cup would be played in 16 groups of three teams each. The top two of each group would qualify for the semi-finals.
The system with the groups of three should now wobble.
Infantino: “After this World Cup and the success of the groups with four teams, we have to take it up once more or at least discuss it once more, whether we make 16 groups of three or twelve groups of four.”
